Watkins College of Art

Write a note to Dr. Greg and Susan Jones to include in the Welcome Banner! The Watkins College of Art will provide faculty, staff and students with multi-colored notecards to jot down a few words of welcome. Welcome notes will be then stitched onto a large canvas forming a mosaic of one of the most well-known symbols of peace, the dove. Join us in extending a very warm, Belmont welcome to our new President and his wife.

Experiential Design students from the Watkins College of Art created digital designs for each of the five ways of being that Dr. Jones has set as a vision for the campus and broader community. The designs feature students’ interpretation of: Hope Inspiring, Character Forming, Future Shaping, Community Engaging, and Bridge Building. 

Ribbons of HOPE

Location: Curb Café Lawn
Watkins College of Art

Join the Watkins College of Art in a collaborative installation called Ribbons of HOPE on the Curb Cafe lawn, outside of the Grand Maddox Atrium and Chick-fil-A. Belmont’s community of students, faculty, staff, neighbors, and friends are invited to write on ribbons that inspire hope and personal affirmations. These ribbons will then be tied together in a steel HOPE installation and will become collective messages that encourage the sentiment to “Let Hope Abound”.

Open Masterclass with Joyce Yang

Award-winning pianist Joyce Yang will present a masterclass on November 3 at 10:30am in the MacAfee Concert Hall. This masterclass will feature three School of Music piano students who will perform and receive critique, comments, and suggestions from Yang. There will be time for Q&A with students at the end of the class.

Doughnuts and Determinants

Location: Gordon E. Inman Center, Room 211
Host: Christian Williams

Join us to play The Last Straw! A board game about the social determinants of health-the social events, patterns, and conditions that affect our health. Players begin by creating characters who, by the roll of the dice are “born” into particular sets of biological and social circumstances. Working in teams, players, have fun while confronting the real-life challenges of staying healthy.

Faith Development Organizations Spiritual Conversations

Our Belmont Faith Development Organizations are hosting a time to engage in spiritiual conversations–a chance to talk with some of the leaders of our 22 Faith Development Organizations about things that really matter, but that often get overlooked in the rush of life. Each week, these groups engage in community-building activities and provide opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations and reflection on the Purpose for which we were created.

How to Assess and Interpret Online Health Information

Health misinformation is a relevant topic in today’s society as we continue to battle against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We will be discussing how health information is typically acquired, and the pitfalls that are associated with obtaining health information from potentially untrustworthy sources. We will also be able to show participants how to properly research health topics using online resources and through communication with health care professionals. The presentation will be given by Dr. Austin Mondloch and Dr. Matthew Sherman, who are both pharmacy fellows currently working in Belmont University’s Christy Houston Drug Information Center.

Purpose is that sense that life wants something from us; our platforms are those places in which we live, work, and relate to others. God designed us uniquely to live on purpose on our given platforms. This talk provides guidance for how to pursue purpose in our platforms.

Injury Prevention for Musicians

This talk will include a brief discussion of general injury prevention techniques for musicians including ergonomics and posture as well as practice techniques. We will also discuss the importance of seeking prompt care after injury.

Join faculty from all three programs in the O’More College of Architecture and Design to hear about purpose and calling in the design disciplines. Profs. Kelly Gore (interiors), Tom Lowing (architecture), and Shannon Pennington (fashion), will present their ideas in PechaKucha format: 20 slides for 20 seconds each, making for a fast-paced storytelling opportunity for everyone interested in hearing about living lives of intention and meaning in these creative fields.

Dorena Wiliamson and Kristen Wilkinson–Be the Bridge for Racial Justice

How does one actually engage in working to end racial injustice? Dorena Williamson is an African-American author and co-leader of one of Nashville’s leading multi-racial churches. She helped create “Be the Bridge” in cooperation with Middle TN ministry leader Kristen Wilkinson, who likewise wants to bridge the racial divide. They will give us practical ways to work together to live out the values of the Kingdom of God, whose hallmarks are justice and love.

The Vocal Athlete: How to Stay Vocally Fit

This talk focuses on risk management for the voice, and will include information on anatomy, ways to condition and care for the voice to reach long term goals, and tips to create a plan of action that will bring confidence and peace where there can be an unknown.

Understanding pain presents an opportunity to change the world. The reality is that the poor understanding of pain is fueling the opioid epidemic, including overdose and suicide deaths,  the persistent pain epidemic across the lifespan, healthcare disparities, and immeasurable psychological and physical suffering and disability. But research shows that understanding pain can positively impact all these things. In this climate of hopelessness, come learn how to be a Hope Dealer and revolutionize the way we understand, experience, and are treated for pain. Join the cause!!!
